Inverter and HUPS Basics

An Inverter is an electronic device that converts DC (Direct Current) into AC (Alternating Current). In the South African context and the frequent Power Outages / Load Shedding – an Inverter System enables household appliances which require AC power – to be powered by DC Power sources (batteries or solar panels) Batteries can then be recharged using mains power via the inverter once the grid is restored – or with Solar Panels.

Our Inverter systems or HUPS (Home Uninterrupted Power Supply) units manage the transition from Mains (Eskom) to battery power and back again as and when mains power supply is interrupted / restored. This happens automatically and seamlessly so that appliances that are connected to the unit experience no interruption to their power supply.

The HUPS is integrated into the Main Distribution Board and connected to selected circuits that will be powered during the power outage (based on the size of Inverter System selected / purchased)

Appliance Loads

The Inverter rating (VA/volt amps) applies to the power rating of the inverter itself and is relevant to the amount of load you can put on the unit (lights/appliances/items). i.e. how many appliances you can power with the unit during Load Shedding / Power Outages. The v (volt) rating relates to the amount of DC current you can connect to the input side of the unit. Most inverters we supply use 12v DC batteries to supply the power to the unit. So for example – a 24v unit will need 2 x 12v batteries to supply the correct power.

However – Based on how the battery banks are configured – the number of batteries can be increased to provide you with a greater amount of battery backup time.
